Director Brett Haley is no stranger to the indie film scene, with past films such as “I’ll See You In My Dreams” and “The Hero.” And now he’s back with “Hearts Beat Loud.”

Frank Fisher (Nick Offerman), a stubborn, quietly enthusiastic record-store owner struggling to make ends meet, decides to push his dream (and history) of being in a band onto his daughter, Sam (Kiersey Clemons). Having once been in a band with Sam’s late mother, Frank wants Sam to discover the talent inside of her. But Sam is about to leave for a pre-med program and does not want to be in a band with her father, despite her obvious talent. What follows is the sweet story of a family coming together under a common interest—whether that interest will last or disappear in the cracks of responsibility is yet to be determined.

I actually stumbled upon this review by total accident. I was searching on Google for the login page of https://bj-baji.pk/ to check some live cricket scores (huge fan here in Karachi!), but the algorithm somehow directed me to this post about Hearts Beat Loud. I am glad it did, though! The father-daughter dynamic described here sounds so heartwarming. We often get too caught up in digital entertainment; it is nice to be reminded of the simple joy of making music with family.

The setting of the record store brings back so much nostalgia. In Pakistan, we are seeing a small revival of vinyl, but everything is mostly digital now. While I love the convenience of modern tech—I mean, I do everything on my phone from banking to playing on https://bj-baji.pk/—there is something irreplaceable about the physical act of putting a needle on a record. This film captures that tactile love for music beautifully. Nick Offerman was the perfect casting choice for Frank.
